Here at Westlea Primary School we have a real talent for sport. We regularly take part in competitions and events in football, netball, basketball and many more sports.
Over the year, we will keep you updated with our efforts and successes.
December 2024
What a great term we have had for sports at Westlea Primary School. Not only have we had the football league, we have also had year 5 swimming, cross country, netball, rugby, girls’ football and athletics. We are all incredibly proud of the dedication and effort of the children in these sporting events.
Football league
The football league kicked off this term for both the A and B team. Both teams had a great start, and all had a fantastic attitude. For the second half of the season, all football teams will have a new football kit.
Year 5 swimming
This school year the children in year 5 have taken part in swimming lessons on a Monday morning. This has been an enjoyable and beneficial experience for all the children, and we can see huge improvements in every child.
Cross country
We had children from year 2 all the way to year 6 taking part in the annual cross-country competition. The children had an enjoyable experience, and all had a fantastic attitude. This has led to organising a running club, hopefully starting in the summer term.
Rugby
Year 5 and 6 have been doing rugby in their PE lessons this half term leading to a rugby competition. Due to the high interest from the children, we started a competition club on a Monday evening and managed to take 2 teams to the rugby competition. The children had an amazing time, worked well as a team and had some great results. The year 5 children can’t wait until next year.
Girls Football
The girls football team had their first competition of the year at East Durham College this half term. This is a new girls team this year, and we couldn’t be more proud of the effort and dedication they showed. All the girls played amazing, only losing one game in the group stage, narrowly missing out on a spot in the semi final.
Our Year 2 girls also took part in a disney inspired football skills day at East Durham College.
Year 5/6 Athletics
This half term we took 19 children from years 5 and 6 to the annual indoor athletics competition at East Durham College. The children have been taking part in the competition club on a Monday evening to get ready for this competition. All children had 2 running events and 2 field events. It was an amazing competition and with a great team effort the children came 1st in the small schools and 4th overall. We can’t wait for the next event in the summer.
Netball
Our netball club launched in September and we have attended our very first netball tournament as a school. The pupils had a great experience and supported their team mates, we entered two teams on the day. We look forward to another netball competition next summer.
Health and Wellbeing Week
Health and Wellbeing Week in October was a huge success with each class taking part in activities. The week was launched with a wellbeing day where pupils enjoyed yoga and mindfulness, team building and fun fitness. We had a skipping day, a golf day a first aid skills day and enjoyed a zoom meeting with a professional footballer to talk about resilience.
Bikeability
A new experience for Westlea Primary School – a bikeability officer from Durham County Council held a session with our Year 4 pupils this November. We have sessions booked throughout the school year for other year groups.
