In today’s world, digital technology plays an important role in everyday life. From communication and learning to entertainment and creativity, technology is used throughout the day for a wide range of purposes. At Westlea Primary School, we believe it is essential that all pupils develop the knowledge and skills needed to become responsible, confident and safe digital citizens.
Our developing Digital Leaders programme aims to give pupils the opportunity to take an active role in promoting positive and safe use of technology across the school community. Working closely with staff, Digital Leaders meet regularly to explore key aspects of online safety and digital responsibility. Through these sessions, pupils learn about current online risks, different forms of cyberbullying and effective ways to respond to unkind or unsafe behaviour on social media and other online platforms.
Digital Leaders play an important role in sharing these messages with their peers. They help to raise awareness of online safety within their classes and across the wider school community, encouraging children to make thoughtful and responsible choices when using technology. We believe that pupils benefit greatly from learning not only from teachers, but also from one another, and our Digital Leaders act as positive role models for younger pupils and their classmates alike.
As part of their role, Digital Leaders will support staff wherever possible and help to demonstrate a wide range of digital skills. They are encouraged to develop confidence, independence and creativity through the use of technology, while also building important leadership and communication skills. Following initial training, pupils are given opportunities to further develop their own knowledge and expertise, allowing them to grow in confidence and become ambassadors for positive digital behaviour.
The Digital Leaders programme reflects our commitment to preparing children for life in an increasingly digital world. By encouraging safe, respectful and purposeful use of technology, we aim to ensure that every pupil understands both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with being online. Through collaboration, leadership and education, our Digital Leaders help create a positive digital culture throughout the school and inspire others to use technology in a safe, responsible and meaningful way.
